Transforming lives and theater: An intimate conversation with Baltimore center stage’s  new artistic director Stevie Walker- Webb

Within the realm of theater, there are these uncommon people who not solely excel of their craft but in addition harness the ability of the stage to drive social change. Obie Award winner Stevie Walker-Webb, the newly appointed inventive director of Baltimore’s Middle Stage, is one such luminary.

In a candid and intimate dialog, we explored his early journey in theater, his deep-rooted dedication to social justice, and his bold plans for shaping the way forward for Baltimore theater.

With a formidable bio and physique of labor, Walker-Webb is described as a survivor of poverty and the associative violence that comes with rising up black and poor in America.  Amongst many accolades he’s a fellow at New York Theatre Workshop and recipient of the Princess Grace Award for Theatre. 

The Tony Award nominee has served because the founding inventive director of the Jubilee Theatre and has created artwork and Theatre in Madagascar, South Africa, Mexico and throughout America. He’s labored because the outreach coordinator for Theatre of the Oppressed-NYC and holds an MFA from The New College, and a  B.S. in Sociology from the College of North Texas. His work has been produced by The Public Theatre, American Civil Liberties Union, Cherry Lane, Zara Aina, La Mama, The New Group, Wooly Mammoth and The Baltimore Middle Stage, making his latest steps on this journey, full circle.

On Oct. 1 he turned inventive director of Baltimore Middle Stage.

Stevie Walker-Webb formally stepped into the position of inventive director for Baltimore’s famed Middle Stage on Oct. 1.

As our dialog started, it’s apparent that Walker -Webb completely loves what he does. His love affair with the theater commenced in Waco, Texas, the place he grew up in a low-income family, together with his mom, father, and 6 siblings. He vividly recollects these youth, the place he turned the director, playwright, and chief orchestrator of household performs that not solely entertained– but in addition allowed him to channel his boundless creativeness. It was inside these humble beginnings that Walker-Webb says he found the transformative potential of theater, firmly believing that the magic of make-believe might transcend actuality.

On the age of 21, he launched into his most vital endeavor, founding the Jubilee Theater.
