NYPD mom reportedly labeled as scammer for requesting to be off on Saturdays because of religion

A Brooklyn police officer and a Seventh Day Adventist has dragged the New York Police Division to courtroom after she mentioned she confronted ridicule and was labeled a scammer when she requested for Saturdays off to watch her non secular worship.

Johanne Saint-Jean, who joined the service in 2016, alleged that she was initially assured that she might observe her non secular beliefs as a Seventh-Day Adventist, a Christian sect that observes the Sabbath from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.

Throughout her eight-year tenure, Saint-Jean claimed that her superiors questioned her non secular practices by saying, “you’re not Jewish. Why are you working towards such as you’re Jewish?”

Based on a lawsuit filed within the Manhattan Supreme Courtroom, Saint-Jean alleged additional that her superiors knowledgeable her there was no place for her within the police division because of her faith. Regardless of her preliminary dream of working for the NYPD, her expertise was a nightmare. She added that her superiors later said that fellow officers have been upset about her being granted a weekend day without work and began to criticize her non secular beliefs. One boss advised her, “I don’t perceive your faith. Your faith is tousled,” as documented in courtroom papers.

Saint-Jean additionally claimed {that a} supervisor made a discriminatory remark by stating that her faith was “not for black folks.” Consequently, she was assigned to work on Saturdays, which compelled her to make use of her private accrued day off to watch the Sabbath.

This, she alleged, has resulted in her lacking out on extra time alternatives and transfers to specialised items, as detailed in her authorized submitting. Based on her, her woes worsened in 2020 when Sgt. Robbin Abrams grew to become her new supervisor. She identified that Abrams advised her that “no cop desires to work with you as a result of you’re a scammer.”

In the identical yr, Saint-Jean claimed that her superiors wrongly declared her absent with out go away on a Saturday and despatched Nassau County cops to her Lengthy Island residence, which she perceives as an act of harassment.

She maintained that when the officers arrived, they knowledgeable her that she was AWOL and claimed that her supervisors had been unable to contact her, which she considers preposterous since she had the day without work as per her non secular lodging.

The officer, who’s a mom of three, mentioned regardless of submitting a number of formal complaints relating to her therapy, she continues to be below fixed harassment. She hopes her lawsuit will immediate the NYPD to institute modifications.
