Let’s be actual — many white girls are usually not mates or allies to Black girls. They by no means have been. That’s the reality, plain and easy. And as Maya Angelou as soon as stated: “When somebody tells you who they’re, consider them.”

Black girls, we should consider what white girls hold displaying us.

On Nov. 5, 53 p.c of white girls did what they’ve at all times carried out: voted for whiteness.

I assumed, foolishly, that almost all of white girls may help Kamala Harris’s bid for the presidency. However no — they as soon as once more reminded us who they really are.

Carmen P. Thompson is a historian, creator and extremely sought knowledgeable on race and Whiteness in America. This week, she discusses race relations between Black and White girls, given the end result of the 2024 presidential election. (Picture courtesy of Oregon State College)

Now, Black girls are being requested to indicate up on Jan. 18, 2025, for one more Ladies’s March to protest one other Donald Trump presidency. We’re supposed to face shoulder to shoulder with white girls and chant that we gained’t return.

Right here’s a suggestion: Simply say no.

Inform any white lady who asks you should you’re going that she ought to protest along with her white sisters and moms and cousins and aunties. She ought to persuade them to not “return” as a result of 53 p.c of them appear simply high quality with doing so.

And Black girls already did the work. We did what nearly all of white girls refused to do: 92 p.c of us stated no to placing a convicted felon — who accused Haitians of consuming cats and canine and referred to as for the Central Park 5 to get the loss of life penalty — again in workplace.

Black girls voted for reproductive rights, well being and justice. What did white girls do? As Melanie Campbell, president and CEO of the Nationwide Coalition on Black Civic Participation, just lately stated, “There was a majority of white girls who voted towards democracy, towards girls’s pursuits, for a racist, for anyone who’s proud to have taken away our proper to decide on.”

White girls weren’t a pal or ally when their husbands had been raping our ancestors. As a substitute, they cruelly and spitefully took out their frustrations with their white husbands on Black girls. They demanded the inhumane beatings of Black girls and insisted on the sale of mixed-race youngsters — their husband’s youngsters — as a result of they seemed extra like him than their very own. These youngsters, enslaved by white girls, had been typically given to their daughters and sons as “items,” forcing them to serve their half-siblings and perpetuating the cycle of exploitation.

It was white girls who made Black girls breastfeed their youngsters in order that they wouldn’t should “undergo” such an indignity. They made Black girls and women sleep on the foot of their beds, catering to their whims — all whereas they feigned helplessness and basked within the energy of their positions as slaveholding mistresses. They handled Black girls as mammies, caretakers, and playthings for his or her youngsters, by no means contemplating that we had youngsters of our personal — youngsters we might barely mom due to them. Regardless of all this, throughout the Suffrage motion, white girls had the audacity to anticipate Black girls to advocate for his or her proper to vote.

Getting the fitting to vote in 1920 didn’t cleanse racism from the hearts of white girls. In 1923, as Brent Staples identified within the New York Instances, “When the black suffragist and civil rights chief Mary Church Terrell petitioned her White sisters for assist, they responded that the disenfranchisement of black girls was a race downside — not a gender downside — and past the motion’s writ.”

Only a few years later, in 1923, Ladies of the Ku Klux Klan was fashioned, and greater than 250,000 White girls grew to become members within the hate group’s first 4 months.

And I want white girls would spare us their performative tears — these crocodile tears which have traditionally led to Black males being lynched by white personal residents or killed by police.

White girls gained’t admit it, however they’ve benefited extra from affirmative motion and variety, fairness, and inclusion hiring than Black girls ever have. In each sector, from the womb to the office, it’s the labor and struggling of Black girls that has introduced white girls nearer to the glass ceiling. However they gained’t come clean with that.

In the meantime, Black girls have realized the exhausting means to not belief white girls they work with. “Our information tells us that Black girls are having their worst experiences once they report back to white girls,” Cierra Gross, the founding father of Caged Chook HR, just lately advised Notable Careers journal.

Don’t fall for solidarity marches. Don’t fall for blue bracelets and white girls’s “check-ins” to see how we’re doing. We don’t want pretend allyship when white girls, who as soon as once more, smiled in our faces whereas clinging to the safety of white male patriarchy and white supremacy — establishments they mothered into existence.

This doesn’t imply Black girls don’t have work to do to prepare for Trump. In a current speech, Barbara Arnwine, president and founding father of the Transformative Justice Coalition, stated, “We gotta discuss how we battle, how we turn out to be a preventing formation, how we’re in a position to know that these battles are going to return, that these form of issues are going to be stated, that these form of assaults are going to be launched.”

So, let’s give attention to retaining ourselves and our neighborhood secure, wholesome, and united. Let’s determine what steps we have to take that can profit Black people at first as a result of we’re firmly within the crosshairs, and 53 p.c of white girls voted for a person who would all too willingly pull the set off.
