White Student Settles Black Women Matter Protest Lawsuit

Morgan Bettinger, a graduate of the College of Virginia, has settled her case after a four-year battle over what she characterised as false allegations that ruined her life. The white scholar filed a lawsuit in opposition to the college following her expulsion associated to a battle at a Black Girls Matter protest in 2020.

Bettinger confronted expulsion after being discovered responsible by the student-run College Judiciary Committee of threatening fellow college students. She alleged that college officers did not adequately guarantee her security following accusations of threatening members at a Black Girls Matter protest in downtown Charlottesville in July 2020.

Because the Day by day Progress experiences, Bettinger settled the lawsuit after suing the college’s governing Board of Guests, College of Virginia President Jim Ryan, and the previous Dean of College students Allen Groves within the U.S. District Courtroom for the Western District of Virginia in July 2023. As College of Virginia spokesman Brian Coy informed the outlet, “The case was resolved by a mutual and amicable settlement and dismissed following a joint movement by each events.”

Because the Jefferson Council experiences, Brown & Gavalier, the Charlottesville regulation agency that represented Bettinger throughout her lawsuit, didn’t disclose the phrases of the settlement and didn’t make their shopper obtainable for any follow-up questions from the outlet.

In August 2023, Bettinger’s lawsuit stemmed from actions the college took after she was alleged to have mentioned that protestors gathered at a 2020 protest would have made “good pace bumps” by Zyhana Bryant, a rising activist who attended the College of Virginia. Of Groves, the lawsuit acknowledged, “The Dean of College students for the College of Virginia didn’t merely put his proverbial thumb on the scales of justice. He put his total weight on it.”
