Sleepovers are a no-go in Monica’s family.

After The Neighborhood Discuss reposted a video of a single father expressing frustration over being unable to host a sleepover for his daughter, the R&B singer made her stance clear.

“Once I came upon why I couldn’t throw my daughter a slumber occasion, I received very unhappy and depressed,” TikTok consumer @markdjangocrazy’s caption learn. In his video, he defined that some mother and father declined to let their daughters attend as a result of he was a single dad internet hosting. Whereas he shared that he was as soon as taken benefit of by an older lady he trusted as a baby, he mentioned he nonetheless didn’t perceive the priority.

However within the feedback, Monica weighed in with a agency “no.”

“We don’t do sleepovers,” she wrote. “My mom didn’t, I don’t both and that utilized to my sons & daughter! In his case inviting some mothers to be there in a single day to chaperone may fit however that might be a no for me as properly.”

Her remark struck a nerve, reigniting a long-running debate amongst mother and father, significantly within the Black group, about whether or not sleepovers are a innocent childhood custom or a danger not price taking.

The dialog isn’t new, however it hits otherwise now. With the rise of social media, mother and father have unprecedented visibility into how different households reside, suppose, and father or mother — and typically, what they see provides them trigger for concern. Weapons left unsecured, alcohol or different substances inside attain, questionable self-discipline, lax display time guidelines, or just properties that function with totally different values — these glimpses into others’ lives can erode belief. It’s not about paranoia a lot as info. Dad and mom can’t unsee what they’ve seen.

On the identical time, the world round sleepovers has modified. As soon as, they thrived inside tight-knit communities the place mother and father knew one another, their church buildings, and their prolonged households. That sense of “the village” — the place everybody seemed out for everybody’s children — has weakened in fashionable life. Mobility, isolation, and busier schedules have made it more durable to construct the type of belief that when made an evening away really feel secure.

Whereas the sleepover debate will possible proceed for each era, it in the end factors to one thing deeper: mother and father aren’t overprotective; they’re under-supported. Constructing a trusted group — by household, religion, or shared actions — could also be the true key to giving children each security and freedom in a world that feels much less sure than ever.

For some, the answer isn’t banning sleepovers altogether however reimagining them as “sleepunders,” late-night hangouts with a transparent ending time earlier than mattress, or family-only overnights. The spirit of childhood bonding stays; it simply takes extra intention.
