University of Kentucky Cancels Minority Graduation Ceremonies

College of Kentucky (UK) President Eli Capilouto mentioned the varsity’s choice to cancel LGBTQ+, Black, and first-generation commencement ceremonies is the easiest way to “defend our individuals,” the Lexington Herald Chief experiences. 

Capilouto defended his stance in a video despatched to college students and employees simply days after saying the college would now not host occasions for graduating minority college students as threats from the Trump administration focusing on variety, fairness, and inclusion (DEI) insurance policies and practices mount.

“We now have made robust choices — choices that in and of themselves trigger concern and, in some instances, harm,” Capilouto mentioned. 

“Canceling celebrations for individuals on our campus who haven’t all the time seen themselves mirrored in our broader group is one instance. We’ve taken that motion as a result of we imagine that’s what’s required, and we imagine complying with the regulation is the easiest way to guard our individuals and our continued capability to assist them.”

College students trying ahead to the college’s Lavender Commencement ceremony for LGBTQ+ college students and Harambe Unity Commencement Celebration honoring Black and first-generation college students have been dissatisfied by the choice.

One was Jay Stringer-Vaught, graduating with a grasp’s diploma in library science.

“Why is UK okay with accepting my homosexual {dollars}, however they’re not okay with celebrating a homosexual particular person?” Stringer-Vaught mentioned. “I really feel offended, I really feel betrayed as a scholar on the College of Kentucky. It seems like a slap within the face.” 

The coed couldn’t afford the required regalia as a way to attend the university-wide Rupp Enviornment graduation. Along with his mom being in a wheelchair, the Lavender Commencement was deemed a smaller ceremony with extra accessibility for his family members.

In early 2025, faculties and universities have been ordered to adjust to a regulation handed by the Kentucky legislature banning all DEI practices by June 30.

The favored public college was additionally recognized in an investigation by the U.S. Division of Training for “allegedly partaking in race-exclusionary practices of their graduate packages.”

“The Division is working to reorient civil rights enforcement to make sure all college students are shielded from unlawful discrimination,” the March 14 letter from Secretary of Training Linda McMahon learn, in response to Kentucky Kernel, the College of Kentucky’s scholar newspaper. “College students should be assessed in response to advantage and accomplishment, not prejudged by the colour of their pores and skin. We is not going to yield on this dedication.”

Capilouto feels the assault on the college, together with 45 different establishments, is expounded to a collaborative effort with the PhD Mission, a networking group that homes networking alternatives for UK doctoral college students.
