Immediately marks the six-year anniversary of Breonna Taylor‘s police-involved taking pictures loss of life in Louisville, Kentucky, which, together with the deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, sparked international Black Lives Matter protests, drawing thousands and thousands to the streets demanding the tip of racial bias in policing and reforms to legislation enforcement businesses throughout the nation.

Days earlier, nevertheless, a federal coverage enacted in 2022 in honor of Taylor was quietly rescinded by the Trump administration. On March 2, Todd Blance, the Deputy Lawyer Common of the U.S. Division of Justice, issued a memo informing high supervisors and U.S. attorneys that “no-knock” entries at the moment are extra broadly permissible.

“We should enable our courageous women and men in legislation enforcement to hold out their duties to the fullest extent permitted by legislation,” Blanche stated within the memo.

The transfer is a departure from Could 2022, when President Joe Biden signed an govt order limiting the usage of unannounced entries, sometimes called “no-knock entries,” and offering steerage to make sure the protected execution of introduced entries. The order additionally required public studies on the variety of no-knock entries and the detailed accounts of circumstances, particularly when an individual is injured.

Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT employee, was fatally shot on March 13, 2020, by Louisville police throughout a botched “no-knock” execution whereas she was sleeping inside her dwelling. Her deadly taking pictures ignited a rallying name for police accountability and racial justice. Although Congress failed to barter a bipartisan laws named after George Floyd that may’ve enacted a number of federal reforms, Biden’s EO, whereas restricted in its scope in comparison with the Floyd invoice, was welcomed by civil rights teams and group leaders.

Forward of signing the 2022 govt order and talking to a room of attendees that included the households of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, President Biden stated, “The households right here right now and throughout the nation [have] needed to ask why this nation, why so many Black People get up understanding they might lose their life and, after all, simply residing their life right now, merely jogging, purchasing, sleeping at dwelling.”

Neighborhood organizations blasted the Trump administration’s choice to roll again the progress made on the federal degree to curb police abuses and police-involved deaths.

“Six years to the day after Breonna Taylor was killed, the Trump administration is weakening federal limits on the very tactic that led to her loss of life,” stated Nadine Smith, president and CEO of Coloration Of Change.

Smith informed theGrio, “When armed officers burst into a house with out warning, folks inside can not inform the distinction between police and intruders. Breonna’s boyfriend fired a single shot, believing they have been below assault. Police responded with greater than 30 rounds, killing her. Think about armed strangers crashing via your door whilst you sleep.”

The racial justice chief added, “No-knock warrants flip that terror and intuition to defend your self right into a loss of life sentence. Coloration Of Change will hold preventing till no-knock warrants are ended and actual accountability turns into legislation.”

Beatriz Beckford, Nationwide Director for Youth & Household Justice at MomsRising, stated the group is “deeply disturbed” by the Trump administration’s transfer, calling it a “reckless choice” to rescind the “commonsense restrictions” on no-knock warrants.

“This motion is callous and shameful. It should very possible end in extra harmless folks being injured or killed, as Breonna Taylor was simply six years in the past when cops entered her Louisville dwelling with out knocking and shot and killed her as she slept,” stated Beckford. “That botched and lethal raid might very possible have been averted if police had merely knocked earlier than coming into.”

Whereas federal laws on police reform has seen little progress, state and native governments have adopted a number of reforms, together with in Breonna Taylor’s dwelling state of Kentucky. Following Taylor’s loss of life, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear signed a bipartisan invoice that restricted no-knock warrants in 2021. Grassroots advocacy work led by organizations like Marketing campaign Zero has led to at the least 24 states passing use-of-force laws to cut back police violence, six states and two cities adopting extra restrictive no-knock raid legal guidelines, and Maryland’s landmark repeal of its Legislation Enforcement Officers’ Invoice of Rights, which closely protected cops from disciplinary motion.

However the battle for federal police reform isn’t over. In December 2025, Democrats, led by lawmakers like U.S. Senator Cory Booker and Reps. Yvette D. Clarke and Jasmine Crockett reintroduced the Breonna Taylor Act, which might ban no-knock warrants.

“What occurred to Breonna Taylor was a profound failure of our justice system — one which we’ve got an ethical duty to right. Within the years since her homicide, the necessity to confront the difficulty of no-knock warrants has solely intensified,” the Congressional Black Caucus stated in an announcement on the time. “No American ought to concern that at any second, legislation enforcement might enter their dwelling unannounced. And no guardian like Tamika Palmer ought to be compelled to endure the grief of dropping her baby to a system that failed her.”

The CBC added, “Breonna Taylor’s life mattered, and her story calls for motion. It’s our responsibility to make sure that what occurred to her by no means occurs once more—to any household, in any group, anyplace on this nation.”

After a Kentucky grand jury did not indict the Louisville officers concerned in Taylor’s loss of life particularly for her killing, President Trump was requested whether or not he thought justice was served.

“Maybe justice was not served by the choice that was rendered by the grand jury in Kentucky…my message is that I really like the Black group and I’ve accomplished extra for the Black group than another president…with the potential exception of Abraham Lincoln,” stated Trump.
