Trump Cuts $600 Million In HIV, STD Prevention & Grants

The Trump administration has introduced a big reduce of $600 million in grants from the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention (CDC) that have been allotted for HIV and STD prevention and surveillance applications. This choice will influence public well being funding in states corresponding to California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota.

A spokesperson from the Division of Well being and Human Providers tells ABC Information that the grants are being terminated as a result of they “don’t replicate company priorities.” The cuts will have an effect on funding for state and native well being departments, hospitals, universities, and non-governmental organizations. Notable reductions embrace $1.1 million for HIV surveillance in Los Angeles County, $5.2 million for Lurie Kids’s Hospital of Chicago to advertise HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) amongst Black cisgender ladies, and $7 million for Chicago’s efforts to check populations disproportionately affected by STDs.

Matthew Rose, a senior public coverage advocate on the Human Rights Marketing campaign, warned that these cuts may reverse a long time of progress in combating HIV.
