‘This is for us, this is for our community’: Brooklyn Tea becomes the first Black-owned tea brand in JFK airport

Travellers flying by way of New York’s John F. Kennedy Worldwide Airport can now sip on Black-owned tea as they put together for his or her subsequent journey. 

This week, Brooklyn Tea & Market celebrated the grand opening of its storefront at JFK Airport, a enterprise enterprise that not solely expands their operations but in addition makes them the first-ever tea-focused retail idea at JFK Airport and the primary Black-owned tea model to be in any airport nationwide. 

“Brooklyn Tea, in partnership with JFKIAT and HMSHost, will develop into the primary black-owned beverage model in any airport within the nation,” Jamila and Alfonso Wright, co-founders of Brooklyn Tea, informed theGrio. “We’re honored to be part of this historical past and symbolize what’s doable when various companies are given the chance to guide.”  

“Working along with JFKIAT and HMSHost to prioritize the significance of various voices and companies has been an unbelievable expertise, and we look ahead to what the long run has in retailer,” she added. 

A pair-founded model, Brooklyn Tea is described as “a love letter to tradition, consolation, and group,” celebrating the therapeutic energy of tea whereas honoring their Caribbean heritage, the place tea was the answer to any drawback. Born from a need to incorporate Black communities within the wellness house, the model operates on a three-word mantra: “therapeutic, ritual, group.” Since launching its on-line enterprise in 2017 and opening its Mattress-Stuy storefront in 2018, Brooklyn Tea has cultivated a loyal following by way of its community-first method and academic storytelling round tea and wellness.  

Now, the model is bringing its deep experience in wellness, tradition, and intentional hospitality to JFK’s Terminal 4.

Brooklyn Tea & Market joins the handful of Black-owned manufacturers with shops on the worldwide airport. Final yr, JFK launched a Small Enterprise Retail Accelerator, which launched three Black-women owned manufacturers: Mom Earth Juice Bar, Stunning Amore Skincare, and Bevo’s Kitchen to Terminal 8. 

The tea model’s airport storefront options 11 unique tea varieties pulled from its assortment of over 150 teas and herbs. From energizing, caffeinated blends to stress-free, medicinal non-caffeinated blends, the vary of teas was fastidiously designed to satisfy the various wants of vacationers. Along with cups of tea, vacationers can buy bins of tea to make at house or present to family members.
