Nestled within the vibrant and thriving West Adams neighborhood, Sovern L.A. stands out as a beacon of creativity, serving as each an artwork gallery and a wellness heart devoted to amplifying the voices of native BIPOC artists and practitioners. Presently exhibiting is “Ancestral Archives,” curated by Sovern’s operations assistant, Maia Ramirez-Beaver.
“We now have three founders, Nicole [Shostak-Sabourian], Erlinda [Carter], and Rima [Thierry], all girls of shade, and their complete goal is to make Sovern non-hierarchical,” defined Maia.
“All of us carry our concepts to the desk. So, I wrote up a proposal for ‘Ancestral Archives,’ they accredited it, and we did an open name for the artists.”
After fastidiously reviewing submissions from over 60 artists, Maia and the Sovern staff chosen 15 standout creators whose works are actually on show by means of the closing reception—free and open to the general public—on Jan. 9.

The theme and title of the exhibition derive from a deeply rooted ardour and curiosity that Maia explores in her personal work as an oil painter.
“I’m desirous about what we understand to be the previous and the way that influences our instinct. With all of the artists [here], that’s the frequent thread: how our cultural histories, our heritage, household bonds, how they affect us. How we as the present era are taking that, breaking cycles, therapeutic all these avenues of liberation,” Maia expounded.
The exhibit options a variety of visible artwork: work, images, combined media, artisanal handcrafted works, and even quick movies. It’s harmoniously complemented by an intimate, inviting, and deliberately designed house. With three predominant rooms, together with the shotgun entrance, the movie room, and the most important room, “The Coronary heart House,” every work has its particular placement fastidiously curated by Maia.
Two of her oil work on show are “Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles” (2022) and an untitled piece (2024), each of which function her household, together with the ancestors and future ancestors who’ve profoundly formed her identification.
“There’s been such a shift [in my work] since I’ve come to Sovern. Simply being surrounded by creativity and group shifted the way in which I take into consideration my work and myself,” Maia mirrored. “What we do right here resonates with folks. We do it for the group, for the folks to get therapeutic justice.”
Sovern affords a plethora of exhibitions all year long, holds weekly and month-to-month lessons—together with Maia’s personal donation-based drawing approach class on Mondays from 7–9 p.m.—and rents its house to practitioners and artists trying to construct their clientele or host occasions.
