Savannah city government to give $500,000 toward restoration of African American art museum

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Town of Savannah will contribute $500,000 to renovate a home that when hosted an African American artwork museum.

The Savannah Metropolis Council voted Sept. 14 to provide the cash towards what’s projected to be a $1.2 million restoration of the Kiah Home, WTOC-TV reviews.

The home, in-built 1910, was bought in 1959 by Calvin and Virginia Kiah. He was a professor in Savannah State College’s training division, whereas she was a public faculty instructor, artist and curator.

The couple created the museum, ultimately including a two-story addition to the entrance of the home to make room for extra artwork and historic objects. The museum closed when Virginia Kiah died in 2001, and the home fell into disrepair, main the Georgia Belief for Historic Preservation to call it as an endangered web site.

The Historic Savannah Basis purchased the home in April 2022 and put in a brand new roof, however stated it wished another person to take over the construction. Town and the Galvan Basis introduced in August that they had purchased the home for $100,000.

The inspiration will fund the rest of the challenge. Metropolis officers say the restored construction will spotlight African American artwork, home a part of the town’s archives, and embrace dwelling area for working artists.
