Phylicia Rashad is about to direct “Speedy Household” in North Carolina.
Contemporary off her Broadway play’s Tony win for Finest Musical, Phylicia Rashad has been introduced because the director for the regional premiere of Paul Oakley Stovall’s Speedy Household at North Carolina’s Blumenthal Arts.
The Tony Award-winning actress is reprising her position as director for the stage play, which is making its East Coast debut following profitable runs at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and Los Angeles’s Mark Taper Discussion board, the latter helmed by Rashad herself, Playbill reported.
The play follows the Bryant household reunion, which is thrown into chaos when the center son brings his boyfriend and tosses him right into a slew of household dysfunction. Race, sexuality, and faith take heart stage on this sharp-witted play that blends Fashionable Household with Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
The play was written by Tony Award-winning multihyphenate Paul Oakley Stovall, the Olivier-nominated producer of A Unusual Loop, and former George Washington within the first nationwide tour of Hamilton. Rashad brings her many years of theater expertise, two Tony Awards, quite a few Emmy nominations, and a Theater Corridor of Fame induction.
Her Broadway credit embody standout performances as Massive Mama in Cat on a Scorching Tin Roof, Aunt Ester in Gem of the Ocean, Violet Weston in August: Osage County, and roles in Into the Woods and Jelly’s Final Jam. She earned a Tony Award for her portrayal of Lena Youthful within the acclaimed revival of A Raisin within the Solar.
As a director, Rashad has helmed productions of August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, Fences, and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, in addition to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin within the Solar.
The Blumenthal Arts forged of Speedy Household consists of Christina Sajous as Evy, Elijah Jones as Jesse, Freddie Fulton as Tony, Andy Mientus as Kristian, Kai Almeda Heath as Nina, and Britney Coleman as Ronnie. Deon Releford-Lee, Samuel Douglas, Aigner Mizzelle, and Vanessa R. Butler are forged as standbys.
