Ohio University Police Search for Group of Men Who ‘Yelled Racial Epithets’ at Black Students, Threatened Them with Firearms

Black Ohio College college students had been reportedly known as racial slurs and threatened by a gaggle of males on campus final weekend.

The incident occurred close to East Union Avenue and College Terrace simply after 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10, in keeping with a information launch from the Ohio College Police Division. The three ladies got here throughout two teams of males who they heard arguing and utilizing the N-word. 

This prompted one of many ladies to name them out for utilizing the derogatory time period. Whereas one group determined to depart the world, the opposite allegedly began to comply with the ladies and “yelled racial epithets at them.” The group consisted of three white males and one who apparently was Black or biracial.

Earlier than fleeing the scene, two of the boys threatened the ladies with weapons with laser sights on them, the information launch stated. Campus police tried to trace them down however couldn’t discover them, and the incident is beneath investigation.

College students on the predominantly white establishment positioned in Athens, about 74 miles from Columbus, expressed their disappointment and shock that an incident of that nature even occurred within the first place.

“Stuff like that doesn’t occur right here fairly often,” one scholar, Brice Telany, instructed WCMH-TV.

One other scholar, Caleb Miller, added: “Seeing that it was type of racially charged is type of disheartening. I imply, it’s 2023; you’d suppose these issues don’t actually occur on a campus as various as this.”

The college launched images of three alleged suspects, however their faces are blurry. It’s unclear if they’re college students on the college. Campus police are searching for extra details about the boys concerned within the incident. 

Interim Vice President for Variety and Inclusion Russell Morrow and Dean of College students Kathy Fahl launched a press release decrying the incident.

“We might be instantly and unequivocally clear on this: the bigotry and threats of violence displayed by the perpetrators on this incident are abhorrent and unacceptable,” the assertion stated. “Actually, we take threats of bodily hurt in opposition to any scholar severely, and we work each day to make sure the security of our campus neighborhood. We’re grateful that no bodily hurt resulted from this incident.”
