Nigerians in Eastern Cape living in fear after violent protests

Nigerians dwelling in South Africa’s Jap Cape say concern is spreading via their communities after violent protests erupted over the coronation of an Igbo conventional chief.

Tensions flared earlier this week when demonstrators took to the streets to oppose the popularity of Solomon Eziko as a standard chief of the Igbo neighborhood.

The protest, organised by members of ActionSA, rapidly turned violent, with a number of automobiles and properties reportedly set alight in components of the province.

Residents in affected areas say the unrest has left many overseas nationals, notably Nigerians, feeling susceptible and unsure about their security.
