New Short Film ‘CROWN’ Celebrates Natural Hair In All Its Forms

CROWN, a brand new quick movie impressed by the C.R.O.W.N Act—which stands for “Create a Respectful and Open World for Pure Hair”—tells the story of an aspiring younger ballet dancer making an attempt to tame her hair into submission as she embarks on crucial audition of her life. And it’s primarily based on true-life occasions from co-writer-director Karisma Jay.

“CROWN is from my very own story. Once I was little, my mother and I have been informed very often that my thick pure hair needed to be straightened right into a bun, and naturally (pun meant) my hair would frizz up or full-on ‘fro as I used to be dancing,” Jay tells EBONY. “CROWN is a chance to redefine Black magnificence and illustration within the movie trade and showcases the creativity of Black hair.”

This coming-of-age story that includes an all-Black solid contains newcomer Kennedy Salley, an AbunDance Academy of the Arts pupil and freshman dance main at LaGuardia Excessive College in New York Metropolis. She performs Star, the younger ballerina in search of her huge break. 

“Kennedy is definitely one among my college students who I educated for years and coached for her huge audition to assist her get accepted into LaGuardia, which is called the Fame college and in addition occurs to be her mother and my alma mater,” Jay shares.

Star’s mother is performed by Nirine S. Brown, who has appeared in Donald Glover’s SWARM and on Abbott Elementary. “I danced together with her since ninth grade, speak about full circle,” declares Jay.

With its upcoming DMV movie premiere this weekend in Maryland, CROWN goals to have a good time and amplify curls, kinks, frizz and afros in all places whereas encouraging everybody to honor their crowns.
