NAACP requests a formal meeting after Kennesaw State University ends Black Studies program

The NAACP in Georgia has requested a proper assembly with Kennesaw State College after the college introduced it was deactivating a handful of “low-producing” majors, together with its Black Research program. 

In a current memo addressed to colleagues, officers on the third-largest college in Georgia introduced it might be deactivating the Black research, Philosophy, and Technical Communication majors efficient instantly, WABE and The Atlanta Voice reported. 

In accordance with WABE, KSU’s assistant vp of strategic communications, Tammy DeMel, referred to the packages as “low-producing” due to their low pupil enrollment. In emails obtained by the Atlanta Voice, college officers mentioned, given the low pupil enrollment, the packages had been now not wanted after reevaluation, they usually had been making the most effective determination for his or her “restricted sources.” 

The College System of Georgia standards for “low-producing” is lower than 10 for a bachelor’s program. Whereas the Black Research and Technical communication packages had fewer than 10 college students, WABE reported that the Philosophy program had 40 college students enrolled as of April 29.  

A “two-year teach-out plan” will likely be carried out so college students at present enrolled within the packages can full them. College and workers will preserve their positions to proceed providing minors, normal training programs, and electives. 

Nonetheless, the announcement has rattled members among the many college, pupil physique, and past. 

“The Georgia State Convention of the NAACP is alarmed by studies relating to the potential elimination of the Black Research Program at Kennesaw State College,” the group mentioned in a launch posted to X that strongly condemned the choice. 

“The Black Research Program isn’t just an educational self-discipline—it’s a important house for mental inquiry, cultural affirmation, and historic truth-telling,” continued the civil rights group. “Its presence displays a college’s dedication to inclusive training and the illustration of marginalized voices within the tutorial canon. The dismantling of such a program can be a profound disservice to college students of all backgrounds and a transparent step backward within the ongoing pursuit of fairness and justice in larger training.”

In accordance with The Atlanta Voice, workers are disputing the transfer to deactivate the packages as a violation of the decision handed by the RCHSS Curriculum Committee in April 2024.

Though the explanation given was low pupil enrollment, the timing, because the Trump Administration is focusing on DEI packages and insurance policies at faculties and establishments throughout the nation, is tough for some to disregard. 

“We intend to advocate for the preservation and full help of the Black Research Program and to make sure that the college upholds its duty to foster a various and inclusive tutorial surroundings,” mentioned the Georgia NAACP.
