Mother speaks out after white teacher sings ‘Monkey’ version of ‘Happy Birthday’ to her son

A Black mom in Polk County, Florida, is demanding an apology and disciplinary motion after her son’s trainer sang a culturally insensitive remix of “Completely satisfied Birthday.”

Desarae Prather is talking out after she was despatched footage from her son’s trainer that started circulating on-line this week, exhibiting the white trainer singing a preferred variation on the usual “Completely satisfied Birthday” lyrics to her 6-year-old son that included: “You reside in a zoo, you appear like a monkey, and also you scent like one too.”

“I robotically mentioned, ‘There’s nothing humorous about it, and I don’t suppose that the youngsters thought that was humorous,’” Prather, who has despatched a proper letter demanding swift accountability and remedy for her baby, advised ABC 10.

The video has drawn outrage partially as a result of, whereas the music’s variation is broadly standard amongst youngsters, the context shifts when directed at a Black baby in a classroom surrounded by white friends and a white trainer. These are remarks I don’t like in any respect.”

After she obtained the footage, she went straight to the varsity’s officers to precise her anger and frustration.

College officers have confirmed they’re reviewing the incident and the trainer’s conduct. The Polk County College District mentioned it’s taking the matter critically however has not introduced any disciplinary choice whereas the investigation is ongoing.

Prather, in the meantime, says she is contemplating eradicating her son from the varsity completely. For now, she has had him transferred to a unique class.

“I don’t play video games about my baby,” Prather mentioned.
