Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone Missing Outfest Due to SAG-AFTRA Strike

Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone won’t be attending the closing night time of this yr’s Outfest LA, the place they have been set to obtain the James Schamus Ally Award.

The couple was anticipated to be readily available for the July 23 occasion at The Montalbán Theatre in Hollywood, however their rep tells Selection that won’t make an look as a result of SAG-AFTRA strike.

“We perceive that Melissa and Ben are unable to affix us for our closing night time as a result of strike,” Outfest government director Damien S. Navarro stated in a press release Thursday afternoon. “We are going to miss them, as our closing night time will probably be an exquisite celebration of our neighborhood.”

Outfest kicked off July 13 on the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. Amandla Stenberg, who obtained the Platinum Maverick Award from the LGBTQ movie pageant, skipped the festivities in assist of the actors walkout. Jacqueline Castel, director of Stenberg’s new indie, “The Animal,” accepted the award on her behalf.

McCarthy and Falcone are longtime LGBTQ allies. In June, they boarded “Relighting Candles: The Tim Sullivan Story” as government producers. The documentary brief, which premiered at Outfest on July 16, tells the story of Tim Sullivan, an 82-year-old West Hollywood candlemaker who has been sober for greater than 40 years. The movie, directed by Zeberiah Newman (“Surprising”) and Michiel Thomas (“Recreation Face”), chronicles Sullivan’s popping out journey and his custom of hiring unhoused and newly sober individuals at his firm, Timothy Jay Candles.

Outfest kicked off with director Aitch Alberto’s queer coming-of-age drama, “Aristotle and Dante Uncover the Secrets and techniques of the Universe,” on opening night time, which came about simply hours earlier than the SAG-AFTRA strike began.

SAG-AFTRA launched a press release on Twitter supporting attendance at opening night time. “Reminder: the #SAGAFTRAstrike begins at 12:01 a.m. on July 14,” the tweet learn. “#SAGAFTRAmembers can assist #OutfestLA tonight. We’ll assist one another on the #SAGAFTRAstrike picket traces tomorrow.”

The forty first version of the 11-day pageant featured greater than 170 titles from over 25 counties.
