Mayor to president? Geordin Hill-Lewis on potential bid to helm SA

Cape City mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has been unofficially tipped because the Democratic Alliance’s subsequent Federal Chief. This comes as John Steenhuisen prepares to step down in April to give attention to his function as Minister of Agriculture.

IS GEORDIN HILL-LEWIS THE NEXT DA LEADER?

This week, John Steenhuisen introduced his resolution to not search re-election as DA chief on the celebration’s April 2026 inside convention.

One among his goals was to give attention to his function as Minister of Agriculture, notably tackling a extreme foot-and-mouth illness outbreak on South African livestock.

The information has been met with chatter that Geordin Hill-Lewis could step into Steenhuisen’s footwear.

Addressing the hypothesis, the Cape City mayor said that public campaigning would begin on the finish of the month, after inside nominations had been made.

He posted on his X account: “No matter is determined, I’ll stay dedicated to face for a second time period because the Mayor of Cape City. It’s the DA’s largest authorities and our strongest platform as we head into the native elections.

“If I do stand for election as DA Chief, I’d welcome a sturdy and principled course of centered on competing concepts for the way forward for our celebration and our nation. We’ve got many glorious leaders, and an open trade of concepts can solely strengthen us”.

He added: “It’s an honour to be thought of. And regardless of the final result, our focus should stay on serving each South African and constructing a rustic of hope”.

MAYOR TO PRESIDENT

Talking to Jacaranda FM earlier this month, Geordin Hill-Lewis was requested if he would contemplate a presidential bid.

With out hesitation, he responded: “Positively!

“I’m obsessed with politics. As a result of it offers us the most effective alternative and leverage to do one thing constructive for our nation and society. To try to construct a rustic everyone knows and consider is feasible”.

He added: “You are able to do that lots as a mayor… However your leverage, your alternative, your influence solely grows as you progress into nationwide authorities”.
