John Forté, Grammy Nominee and Fugees Collaborator, Dies

John Forté, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer whose work helped form one in all hip-hop’s most consequential albums, died at 50, authorities confirmed. Forté reportedly was discovered useless the afternoon of Jan. 12 at his residence in Chilmark, Mass. Police stated there have been no rapid indicators of foul play, and the state health worker is investigating the reason for dying.

A Brooklyn native, Forté emerged within the mid-Nineties as a key inventive pressure alongside the Fugees, co-writing and producing two songs on “The Rating,” the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning album that turned a landmark in hip-hop and world common music. His anchor verse on “Cowboys” and his behind-the-scenes musical sensibility positioned him among the many period’s most revered collaborators.

Forté later launched two solo albums, “PolySci” on Columbia Information and “I, John” on Clear, tasks that leaned into his strengths as a multi-instrumentalist and storyteller. His work prolonged past recording studios to movie, tv and reside efficiency, the place he developed a popularity for intimate, acoustic-driven reveals that foregrounded reflection and social consciousness.

In 2000, Forté’s profession was interrupted when he was arrested at Newark Worldwide Airport and later sentenced to 14 years in federal jail on drug trafficking prices. After serving seven years, his sentence was commuted in 2008 by President George W. Bush following advocacy from artists and supporters, together with Carly Simon.

Following his launch, Forté rebuilt his life and profession with regular goal. Since late 2008, he recorded greater than 60 songs, carried out dozens of live shows, started work on a memoir, and launched a profitable public talking profession centered on accountability, resilience and inventive renewal. In 2011, he based Le Fortress, an organization created to handle his tasks throughout music, movie and different inventive fields.

Forté additionally contributed music for movie and documentary tasks and wrote “One thing to Lean On,” which turned the inaugural theme tune for the Brooklyn Nets. He lived in Chilmark for the previous decade together with his spouse, photographer Lara Fuller, and their two youngsters and was thought to be an energetic presence within the native arts group.

All through his later work, Forté spoke overtly about transformation and accountability, themes that formed each his music and his public life. “I consider in my coronary heart of hearts that there’s wellness alongside the way in which,” Forté stated in a 2022 interview, reflecting on his journey after jail. “And for that wellness, there’s additionally gratitude.”
