*Grammy-nominated musician John Forté, identified for his work with the Fugees, has died at age 50 in Martha’s Winery, PEOPLE studies.

Forté was discovered deceased Monday at his Chilmark residence on Martha’s Winery at age 50. Emergency responders had been summoned to the property after a neighbor found Forté unresponsive on his kitchen flooring round 2:25 p.m. Authorities arrived to search out him alone and declared him useless on the location. Investigators discovered no proof suggesting foul play, although the official reason behind dying stays undetermined.

Chilmark Police Chief Sean Slavin mirrored on the impression throughout the tight-knit island neighborhood. “It’s such a small neighborhood, this dying hits near residence. It’s the upside and the draw back to residing on such a small Island,” Slavin stated.

Forté’s musical journey started in Brooklyn, the place he studied violin earlier than attending Phillips Exeter Academy and later enrolling at New York College. Whereas there, he lived with Talib Kweli and left faculty to work with hip-hop document label Rawkus Data.

Lauryn Hill facilitated Forté’s introduction to the Fugees throughout the early Nineteen Nineties, launching a collaboration that may outline his profession. He earned manufacturing and co-writing credit on the group’s 1996 launch “The Rating,” receiving a Grammy nomination at 21, and subsequently contributed to Wyclef Jean’s 1997 album “The Carnival.”

His profession skilled a dramatic interruption in 2000 when authorities arrested him at Newark Worldwide Airport on drug fees, resulting in a 14-year jail sentence. He maintained his artistic output behind bars, writing songs and in the end recording “I, John,” an album that includes collaborations with notable musicians, together with Carly Simon and Herbie Hancock.

Simon emerged as considered one of his most vocal supporters, publicly advocating for his freedom and characterizing his punishment as extreme. President George W. Bush commuted Forté’s sentence in 2008, granting him early launch.
