Stephen A. Smith has lengthy been thought of polarizing. His success on “First Take” and as a famous journalist and media determine have vaulted him to the highest of the record of essentially the most influential individuals in sports activities journalism and among the many strongest. On the identical time with that energy, Smith has come beneath fireplace for his feedback about notable Black figures, politicians and extra.

Famously, Pleasure Reid instructed Smith to “follow sports activities” after his response to Renee Good being shot and killed by ICE brokers in January. He’s additionally drawn the ire of Rep. Jasmine Crockett over a number of points and has had others within the media house, resembling “All The Smoke” host and former NBA champion Matt Barnes, tackle him for feedback he made about LeBron James after James supplied a critique of the town of Memphis.

“I performed in Memphis, acquired a number of love for the town, however there’s little question that the town wants an improve with regards to its services for professional gamers,” Barnes stated on the time. “However Stephen A., you shouldn’t have an issue with that.”

Barnes added, “You’ve been the identical man in entrance of the digicam for the final handful of months disrespecting Serena Williams, disrespecting Jasmine Crockett, disrespecting Kamala Harris, and faucet dancing for the entire white Republican Occasion.”

Barnes stated Smith was “on bullsh-t.” Whereas many share the sentiment concerning the ESPN pundit, Smith fired again at these statements and others throughout his look on “Funky Friday” with Cam Newton.

Stephen A. vs. his critics

After Newton recalled Barnes saying the “outdated” Stephen A. wouldn’t precisely admire the “new” Stephen A., the 58-year-old commentator and HBCU grad flipped it on him.

“That’s bullsh-t, that’s not true,” Smith instructed Newton across the 1-hour mark of their dialog. “That’s not true. The outdated Stephen A. Smith and the brand new Stephen A. Smith is identical Stephen A. Smith. I ain’t modified. They modified.”

He added, “The actual fact of the matter is that there’s an expectation that’s been levied on my shoulders. And I bear in mind I had this argument with certainly one of my boys. Don’t come to me attempting to place new expectations on me as a result of I lastly acquired the paper that validates the work that I’ve achieved for many years. I earned this sh-t. Ain’t no one give this to me. I labored my ass off.

“No one can query my work ethic and what I completed and the muck and mire that I needed to endure to climb this ladder and get to the place I acquired. We’re sitting up right here as Black individuals always speaking about how we wish I simply do and we wish what we’ve earned and we wish what we deserve after which a brother come alongside and do it and now you wish to sit up there and place new expectations as a result of I’m the one which made it. F-ck that! That’s not proper.”

Smith’s rise from a Philadelphia journalist to a part of the ESPN household within the early 2000s, due largely to his work and reference to Allen Iverson, is effectively documented. He isn’t keen to again down from the success he’s carved out, even when it pains him to listen to Black individuals say he’s “bought out.” After admitting that 2025 was a tricky yr, he realized there have been sure issues he might recover from. Betrayal wasn’t certainly one of them.

“After I really feel betrayed, bro?” Smith started. “It might be, it might be ladies. It might be a few of my boys. I’ve had individuals actually say, ‘Black individuals don’t f-ck with you. You’ve betrayed your race. We don’t wish to f-ck with you. These individuals can by no means come again in my life. They’ll go to hell. They’ll by no means come again. To know me? That minimize deep. I virtually misplaced my profession as a result of I regarded out.”

Smith readily admits that he feels he’d be paid much more handsomely if he did the issues individuals accuse him of to warrant the “sell-out” tag. However the longtime journalist is aware of that even when he’s talking his fact, somebody is listening. And he’s not keen to again off from what he feels is his job to do.
