Howard College (HU) is understood for being a pioneer for a lot of firsts, so it was no shock that HU could be the primary HBCU with a Ladies’s Rugby Group. Howard Rugby Captain and Co-Founder Takunda Ruskie acknowledged, “Our program provides an inclusive house for present and future generations of Black Ladies Athletes to play Rugby. They’re destined for greatness. The way forward for girls, particularly Black girls in Rugby, is shiny, and I can’t wait to see how far the Howard Rugby Membership goes.”
Howard College Alumni Membership of Houston President Dr. Erika Gentry was excited to help her Alma Mater together with her Government Board when the Howard Rugby Membership got here to Houston to compete towards Claremont College. The Girl Bison Rugby Group began taking part in as a membership crew in 2021. They represented Howard in Houston for the Nationwide Collegiate Rugby Championship sport. Howard Alumni Membership of Houston met their coach, Katherine Aversano, a Howard Regulation alumnus, who’s main the efforts of recruiting extra African American females to educate, handle and play rugby within the US and particularly at Howard. Howard didn’t beat Claremont for the championship, however they’re off to a fantastic begin, and we commend their effort.
Black girls’s participation in Faculty Rugby elevated by 111.8% between 2013 – 2020. That is superb as a result of Rugby will not be historically performed within the USA, and many ladies have prevented it because of the sport’s aggressive and strenuous nature.
