The Houston Impartial College District accredited naming a Waltrip Excessive College convention room after John Whitmire amid sharp public debate.

A proposal to call a convention at Waltrip Excessive College after Mayor John Whitmire sparked a debate at a current Houston Impartial College District board assembly.

The college district paperwork point out the naming wouldn’t use public funds. Mother and father say the main focus needs to be on extra wraparound companies and libraries for college students.

The symbolic gesture landed throughout heightened scrutiny of HISD management selections, particularly following adjustments to magnet packages at 10 excessive colleges.

The college district states that Whitmire, a former dean of the Texas Senate, is a notable alumnus of Waltrip Excessive College. He graduated from the college in 1968 and commenced working for the Texas meals stamp workplace.

Whitmire served within the Texas Home of Representatives for 10 years and within the Texas Senate for 40 years.

He turned the mayor of Houston in January 2024.

These supporting the naming argue that honoring Whitmire displays his lengthy tenure in public service and his ties to Houston’s civic life.

Others have an opposing take.

“Why is a convention room being named after a sitting mayor?” acknowledged the Group Voices for Public Schooling. “The primary time this has ever occurred. What do Miles and Whitmire have in frequent? They refuse to speak to the media and ignore public suggestions.”

Waltrip father or mother Eduardo Brito instructed the board that whereas he personally opposed the thought, the backlash surrounding it was misplaced.

“So far as the Whitmire convention room is worried, whereas I’m not a fan of it and suppose it’s a political ****, I’ll do what you by no means do and admit once I’m unsuitable,” he mentioned. “It was completed appropriately and funded by the alumni and the picture circulating on social [media] the place earlier than it was lined and it’s capable of come down rapidly if the board votes no. The warmth it’s getting isn’t truthful. That’s what occurs when folks don’t think about you.”

Mother and father and neighborhood audio system repeatedly voiced frustration with what they described as poor communication and rushed decision-making round proposed magnet and CTE program adjustments.

One other recurring difficulty was entry to libraries. Mother and father spoke on an agenda merchandise that approves new library e book orders and donations. In accordance with Texas Senate Invoice 13, all new library materials-whether bought or donated-must be publicly listed for at least 30 days and formally accredited by the board earlier than being added to any campus library assortment.

On this context, father or mother Ellen Walter referred to as out HISD’s choice to show libraries into staff facilities at New Schooling System (NES) colleges.

“Even when colleges had been absolutely stacked, once more, most of them aren’t; it means little or no if there isn’t a librarian to maintain monitor of the books, suggest new ones for younger readers to strive, and buy replacements as wanted,” Walter mentioned. “Solely 4 books out of the books being submitted to evaluate tonight are from colleges which can be Title I. It doesn’t take a lot to note that these colleges are unable to purchase new books for his or her libraries. But, colleges in well-off areas are capable of buy them.”

Further considerations included inadequate wraparound companies.
