Harry Dunn, officer who defended the US Capitol on Jan. 6, is running for Congress in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A former police officer who defended the U.S. Capitol towards rioters on Jan. 6 introduced Friday he’s operating for Congress in Maryland.

Harry Dunn wrote on X, previously generally known as Twitter, that he shall be operating in a crowded Democratic main to interchange Rep. John Sarbanes, a Democrat who just isn’t in search of reelection.

Dunn made the announcement a day earlier than the third anniversary of the assault on the Capitol that disrupted the certification of the 2020 election, saying in his marketing campaign announcement that former President Donald Trump was “hell-bent on ending what he began” three years in the past.

“On January sixth, I defended our democracy from insurrectionists as a Capitol Police Officer. After, President Biden honored me with the Presidential Residents Medal,” Dunn wrote within the announcement of his candidacy. “At this time, I’m operating for Congress to cease Trump’s MAGA extremists & guarantee it by no means occurs once more.”

Dunn is operating in Maryland’s third Congressional District, which stretches between Baltimore and the nation’s capital. The race already has drawn 5 state legislators to run within the closely Democratic district.

In a video Dunn launched on the social media website, he stated he left the police power a couple of weeks in the past after greater than 15 years of service to make his congressional bid.

“I’m getting into a brand new function at this time, however I can’t do it alone,” Dunn stated. “I imagine everybody of us has a job to play on this struggle. So be part of me. We’ve received a democracy to guard.”

Dunn, who testified earlier than the Jan. 6 committee in Washington, instructed lawmakers about an trade he had with rioters who had absolutely purchased into Trump’s false claims that the election was stolen and believed “no person voted for Joe Biden.”

In his testimony earlier than Congress in 2021, Dunn, who’s Black, described how rioters yelled racial slurs at him after he instructed them that he voted for Biden and his vote must be counted. Dunn stated a crowd of Capitol intruders yelled a racial slur at him, one thing that by no means occurred whereas he was on responsibility throughout greater than a dozen years on the power.
