Harlem Chamber of Commerce kicks off Harlem Week at Schomburg

The Better Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) is celebrating its a hundred and twenty fifth anniversary and held its forty ninth annual Harlem Week kickoff on the Schomburg Heart this Thursday. 

To be clear, this pre-celebration bash, organized by the Chamber ,often occurs on the mayor’s Gracie Mansion in July and Harlem Week itself takes place in August. The week started in 1974, initially as Harlem Day. It honors the easiest of Harlem’s Black, Caribbean, African, and Hispanic diasporic traditions, and showcases the neighborhood’s financial, political, and cultural historical past.

To incorporate Black Music Month recognition, the Chamber invited rapper and writer Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run DMC and singer Nona Hendryx, and honored the late Chuck Jackson.

McDaniels, an avid comedian guide lover as a baby, was selling his kids’s guide “Darryl’s Dream.” The guide is a narrative about discovering confidence and dealing with bullies—a mirrored image of feeling awkward rising up as a nerd alongside the appearance of hip-hop music.
