Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has as soon as once more proven he cares extra about being the Trump administration’s lapdog than defending the rights of the folks he was elected to characterize. On Monday, Abbott threatened to revoke $110 million in public security funding if town of Houston didn’t repeal a brand new ordinance relating to how lengthy officers can maintain a suspect who might have an administrative warrant from ICE.

In line with the New York Instances, Houston’s metropolis council handed the ordinance in a 12-5 vote final Wednesday. The ordinance removes prior steerage that regulation enforcement should maintain a suspect with an ICE warrant for no less than half-hour to offer immigration officers time to reach. Underneath the brand new rule, officers nonetheless inform ICE brokers that they discovered the suspect, however are underneath no requirement to carry them.

“When a lawful visitors cease ends, that particular person is free to go — the Fourth Modification says so,” Abbie Kamin, a Democratic council member who sponsored the ordinance, instructed the Instances.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire, a Democrat, didn’t initially assist the ordinance, however voted in favor of it as he believed it “affirmed our unique coverage: Houston enforces state and native regulation — not federal regulation, and we aren’t ICE.” Whitmire has referred to as the potential lack of funding “a disaster scenario.”

“The potential lack of state funding poses actual challenges for the Houston Police and Hearth Departments and can impression public security companies throughout our metropolis,” the mayor mentioned in an announcement. Whitmire added that he “repeatedly warned the ordinance sponsors” concerning the “authorized and monetary dangers related to this strategy,”

KHOU stories that Texas Lawyer Common Ken Paxton opened an investigation on Friday into whether or not the ordinance violates state regulation. The Governor’s Public Security Workplace despatched the letter threatening to drag the funding, as they consider the ordinance immediately contradicts an settlement Whitmire made with the state to safe funding.

From KHOU:

State officers argue that this immediately contradicts a certification Whitmire signed in April 2025 as a situation of receiving grant funding. In that settlement, town pledged to completely cooperate with the U.S. Division of Homeland Safety, together with notifying federal authorities about people in custody and honoring detention requests.

The letter warns that the ordinance “is in breach” of that certification and “imperils all grant agreements” between the state and town for fiscal 12 months 2026.

It additionally units a deadline of April 20 for Houston to substantiate it won’t implement the ordinance and can transfer to repeal it. Failure to conform might consequence within the termination of all associated grants and require town to repay the total quantity, roughly $110 million, inside 30 days.

Kamin pushed again towards Abbott’s threats, accusing the Republican governor of “making an attempt to defund the police.” The Houston Metropolis Council will meet this week to debate the governor’s letter and whether or not to droop the ordinance in response.

Contemplating that Houston is among the cities internet hosting the World Cup this summer season, the ordinance is actually in all probability a great way to stop any pointless drama relating to ICE. I, for one, am not trying ahead to the inevitable tales of ICE brokers harassing worldwide vacationers who’re merely right here to look at their nation play some soccer.

The truth that Abbott would threaten public security funding on the eve of such a high-profile occasion exhibits that he cares extra about capitulating to the Trump administration than truly protecting the state protected.
