Gov. Kathy Hochul eliminates certification backlog for MWBEs

Gov. Kathy Hochul celebrates the elimination of New York’s yearslong certification backlog for minority- and women-owned enterprise enterprises (MWBEs) following a $11 million funding secured by the Governor within the FY 2023 Funds to enhance certification effectivity.

The announcement, made Tuesday on the New York MWBE Discussion board in Albany, implies that Empire State Improvement’s Division of Minority- and Girls-Owned Enterprise Improvement can be working with out a backlog of certification functions for the primary time in many years.

“The backlog within the MWBE system was unfair, it was unjust, and now it’s historical past. Minority- and women-owned companies are essential to New York’s long-term financial success, and I made it a high precedence to lastly finish the backlog so these entrepreneurs had the instruments they should develop and thrive,” Hochul stated. “New York is leveraging important investments to empower minority and ladies enterprise house owners, obtain unprecedented MWBE utilization, and construct a extra equitable, extra inclusive enterprise surroundings.”

In August 2021, Hochul inherited a major MWBE certification backlog with hundreds of functions pending approval. At the moment, software assessment and processing might take so long as 499 days.

Hochul proposed an overhaul of New York’s MWBE program in her 2022 State of the State handle and secured an $11 million funding within the FY 2023 Funds to scale back certification wait instances and eradicate the certification backlog. 

 “Bettering the certification course of and eliminating the MWBE certification backlog opens the door to financial progress and development for Minority and Girls-Owned Enterprise Enterprises throughout New York State,” stated Empire State Improvement President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight. “By eradicating systemic obstacles, we empower numerous companies and entrepreneurs to comprehend their full potential, spur native job creation, encourage new investments, and domesticate statewide financial growth.
