The Florida Schooling Affiliation, the state’s largest lecturers union, stated the up to date requirements have been “a disservice to Florida’s college students and are an enormous step backward for a state that has required educating African American historical past since 1994.”

At a gathering on schooling coverage on Wednesday, schooling commissioner Manny Diaz stated the revised Black historical past curriculum makes it extra “strong.”

“I feel that is one thing that’s going to set the norm for requirements in different states,” Diaz stated, including that Florida will preserve “educating the nice, unhealthy, and ugly of American historical past” in an age-appropriate method.

Alex Lanfranconi, the state Division of Schooling’s communications director, reiterated Diaz’s feedback on Twitter, saying that the brand new requirements “train all of it” and that most of the people shouldn’t consider the “union lies.”

Nevertheless, critics name the brand new “benchmark clarifications” to the present Black historical past curriculum a “step backward” that may dilute historical past. The modifications embody instructing elementary college college students to “acknowledge Rosa Parks and Thomas Jefferson as people who symbolize the US.”

The FEA criticized the technique, claiming it favors fast recognition and reminiscence over extra profound educating of their “histories and struggles.”
