Their great-grandchildren are actually suing town, in search of justice for the misplaced residence and the generational wealth it might have supplied.

In January 1924, Sidney Dearing, a profitable businessman from Oakland, purchased a home in Piedmont. On the time, native legal guidelines made it practically inconceivable for Black individuals to personal property. To work round this, his white mother-in-law purchased the home for $10,000 with Dearing’s cash and transferred possession to the household, in response to ABC 7 Information.

The Dearings’ life within the residence was marked by fixed threats. Tons of of neighbors protested, mobs gathered exterior, bombs appeared close to the property, and the household acquired letters threatening lynching. Inside only a yr, town moved to sentence the property, claiming it wanted the land for a highway that was by no means constructed.

Two weeks in the past, the household filed a lawsuit arguing town used eminent area to forcibly evict them as a result of they had been Black. The criticism highlights how the eviction blocked different Black households from proudly owning houses in Piedmont for many years.

“This can be a rich enclave. And the individuals who weren’t compelled out of Piedmont have been in a position to benefit from the worth of their residence. The municipal companies that include dwelling in that group. That prime-quality schooling that comes together with dwelling in that group,” mentioned Leah Aden of the NAACP Authorized Protection Fund, representing the household.

Specialists and former metropolis officers say the case reveals how deeply racism formed Piedmont and different American cities. Whereas town has supported a memorial to acknowledge the previous, the household says that’s not sufficient. The home is now value greater than $2 million. The lawsuit seeks compensation for misplaced wealth, alternatives, and advantages of homeownership that Sidney Dearing by no means acquired.
