Exiting the assembly: Dickens retires, Joyner resigns

In a twist of occasions this election season, Assemblymember Inez Dickens has determined to retire from her long-held Harlem seat within the seventieth Meeting District and Assemblymember Latoya Joyner abruptly resigned from the 77th Meeting District within the Bronx.

This Monday, Jan. 22, Dickens introduced that she could be retiring on the “finish of this 12 months” and wouldn’t search re-election. Dickens had adopted within the footsteps of her father, the late Assemblymember Lloyd E. Dickens, and her uncle, the late Assemblymember and state Supreme Courtroom Justice Thomas Okay. Dickens. She served on the Metropolis Council in Harlem from 2006 to 2017 and within the meeting for the final seven years.

“It has been a humbling journey to work as a servant chief in metropolis and state authorities with the longevity I’ve skilled,” stated Dickens in a press release. “I used to be blessed with the fortitude to make a visual and lasting impression on people, households, neighborhoods, and establishments in my beloved village of Harlem. The job of combating for the underprivileged, under-resourced, and under-represented doesn’t finish with my retirement. As I shut this chapter of my life, the story is just not over.”

Her marketing campaign stated that Dickens, 75, has been considering retirement for some time, particularly since her kidney transplant in 2022. Dickens’ marketing campaign stated that her retirement had nothing to do with the candidates who had introduced they had been working towards her.

On January 4, Joyner, 37, introduced that she was leaving workplace. 

Joyner chaired the Meeting Labor Committee and was a member of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, & Asian Legislative and Legislative Ladies’s caucuses. She had been in workplace since 2015. In a social media publish, she stated she’s closing this “chapter” of her life after cautious consideration and shall be “pursuing an thrilling new alternative” that can permit her to proceed serving the group and state.

“I’m grateful for the extraordinary service Latoya has carried out for her constituents and our state,” stated Governor Kathy Hochul in a press release. “I want her luck as she embarks on a brand new journey, and I sit up for working with the subsequent consultant to ship for New York.”
