Elders honored at 61st Commemoration of Malcolm X

Greater than 100 folks gathered on the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Middle for the 61st Commemoration of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

The theme was “Honoring Our Elders.” Vanguard award recipients included Amsterdam Information columnist, creator, and educator Herb Boyd, Black Arts Motion artists Sonia Sanchez and Rashidah Ismaili, director of the Middle for Black Literature and Nationwide Black Writers Convention, Dr. Brenda Greene, supervisor of the Malcolm Shabazz Market, Dr. John “Satchmo” Mannan, and African American Research educator, Dr. Anthony Inexperienced.

NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani, Civil Rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, New York Senator Cordell Cleare, and Actively Black clothes model founder Lanny Smith have been among the many others who made remarks.

Two of Malcolm and Betty Shabazz’s six daughters have been in attendance: Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, who serves as chairperson for the Middle, and the youngest Malaak Shabazz.
