Doodle For Google Finalist Highlights Black Hair As ‘Superpower’

Washington state excessive schooler Kameirah Johnson entered the artwork contest with a drawing specializing in Black hair energy.

Kameirah Johnson is certainly one of 5 finalists for the artwork contest, along with her drawing specializing in the legacy of Black hair in America. Her art work, titled “Hair Energy: The Crown that Grows From Us,” symbolizes her unbreakable connection to her tresses. Google and NBA all-star Giannis Antetokounmpo introduced Kameirah as one of many esteemed finalists.

The Doodle for Google Artwork contest permits younger artists to showcase their artistic expertise for an opportunity to get featured on the search engine’s homepage. 1000’s of children from grades Ok by way of 12 submitted drawings that align with this 12 months’s theme of “My Superpower is…”

Kameirah opted to spotlight her hair, representing a triumphant legacy for Black men and women to reclaim their pure types.

“My superpower is my hair and the household historical past it carries. Every texture and elegance holds tradition, care, and survival handed down with out phrases,” wrote the excessive schooler in an announcement. “Mendacity within the grass, our crowns relaxation with out weakening. This kinky hair refuses conformity; it makes us completely different. Formed by our lineage, our hair is undeniably stunning.”

Together with her personal crown, Kameirah hopes to take care of this historical past as she maintains her kinky curls. Her art work, nonetheless, extends past the private. By uplifting Black hair, she additionally spreads consciousness of different actions that champion pure hairstyles. As social advocates proceed to battle in opposition to hair discrimination, notably by way of CROWN Act insurance policies and laws, Kameirah’s advocacy provides to this ongoing trigger for variety and justice.

Followers supporting her purposeful artwork can vote for Kameirah’s doodle till April 29. If she wins, Kameirah would obtain a $55,000 scholarship and a $50,000 tech package deal for her college.
