Deaf Black Woman Awarded $1.2M After Cop Violently Arrested Her for “Not Listening”

Nationwide — Andrea “Dre” Hollingsworth, an African American girl from Las Vegas, Nevada, who’s deaf, gained a $1.2 million settlement after a Nevada police officer violently pulled her from her automotive in entrance of her two daughters. The officer handcuffed her for allegedly “not following orders,” though she couldn’t hear him.

The incident occurred in April 2021, after police acquired a name accusing Hollingsworth of stalking. Her daughters advised officers they have been solely attempting to gather $200 in hire from the caller. Regardless of this, Officer Michael Rose demanded Hollingsworth observe his orders, refusing to let her talk by writing or signal language whereas carrying a masks through the pandemic.

In keeping with Atlanta Black Star, physique digital camera footage reveals Hollingsworth repeatedly attempting to clarify she couldn’t hear, pointing to her ears. Rose ignored her and compelled her to the bottom, urgent a knee into her again whereas handcuffing her.

Her daughters cried because the officer barked orders and advised them to “discuss some sense” into their mom as a result of she’s “not listening.”

Hollingsworth, 40, filed a federal lawsuit claiming Rose and the police division violated her Fourth and 14th Modification rights in addition to the People with Disabilities Act. The go well with detailed how the officer’s refusal to accommodate her deafness precipitated each bodily and emotional hurt, whereas traumatizing her kids. She was launched with no prices.

Final week, Hollingsworth gained a $1.2 million settlement. The settlement additionally requires the police division to supply necessary coaching on interacting with deaf or hard-of-hearing people. Town now contracts ASL interpreters for conditions requiring efficient communication.
