Over 59 years later, the Black neighborhood nonetheless faces discrimination.

Butler shared a press release addressing the 2013 case, Shelby County v. Holder, which eradicated mandatory federal protections for minority voters in numerous jurisdictions and the 2021 Brnovich v. DNC, which adopted ‘guideposts’ that make it laborious to show racial discrimination when casting a poll.

“Although state lawmakers and election officers could now not make voters of colour depend the variety of jelly beans in a jar or the variety of bubbles on a bar of cleaning soap, we all know that they proceed to attract racially discriminatory Congressional districts in a approach that stops voters of colour from electing the candidates of their selection,” Butler wrote. “One want solely to look to the Alabama State Capitol only a quick stroll away from the place we sit right now and the state legislature’s try and defy the Supreme Courtroom’s order in Allen v. Milligan final summer time to attract an extra majority-Black congressional district to grasp that some issues haven’t modified.”

In 2023, the Supreme Courtroom dominated that Republican lawmakers clearly violated voter’s rights after they redrew the state’s congressional map after the 2020 census and didn’t create a second Black district. Because of the disparities, lawmakers have dedicated to gathering in Selma yearly to convene with native leaders.

“I come again to Alabama – to Montgomery and Selma – first, as a result of I used to be so near John Lewis. I walked throughout the Edmund Pettus Bridge 15 instances with John Lewis, seven of which I held his hand as we walked throughout. That was one of many highlights of my life as a result of John Lewis exuded one of the best of us in America, one of the best of us as human beings, one of the best of us as kids of God,” Hoyer expressed. “It wasn’t so way back that civil rights leaders, like my pricey good friend and brother John Lewis, put every thing on the road in Alabama and throughout the nation to advance voting rights for African People.”

At the moment, members of Congress are pushing to cross the John Lewis Voting Rights Act in his honor which might require states to hunt federal approval earlier than altering their voting legal guidelines.
