Black Police Officer Battling Kidney Failure Fired Six Months Before Retirement, Loses Benefits

Nationwide — Derek Williams, an African American police officer from Mount Vernon, New York, is going through termination whereas battling kidney failure, simply six months earlier than retirement. The choice additionally ends his medical insurance, placing his life-sustaining therapy in danger.

Williams has labored for the Mount Vernon Police Division for 19 years and beforehand served in its elite emergency service unit. His function typically concerned lengthy hours and harmful assignments, particularly throughout instances of disaster.

In 2020, Williams contracted COVID-19 after months of working double shifts through the top of the pandemic. His well being continued to say no within the years that adopted, and medical doctors later recognized him with kidney failure. He now is dependent upon day by day dialysis to outlive.

“I do 9 hours of dialysis seven days every week to keep up my well being. With out that, I wouldn’t survive,” Williams advised WLBT whereas standing alongside retired Mount Vernon officers who gathered to help him.

The police division categorised Williams’ situation as a non-job-related sickness and stopped paying him as soon as he grew to become too sick to work. Though medical doctors cleared the 45-year-old officer for desk obligation, the division denied his request for gentle obligation. He’s now simply six months wanting qualifying for a diminished pension.

“I begged for my job again. I begged to come back in no matter hours that I could be able to doing. And I used to be advised there’s no gentle obligation for me,” Williams mentioned.

Earlier this month, Williams obtained a termination letter efficient December 31. The transfer will finish his profession and minimize off his medical insurance whereas he waits on a kidney transplant and a call on his state incapacity pension utility.

“I simply really feel like they haven’t any empathy. They’d no compassion,” Williams mentioned.

Former Mount Vernon police commissioner Shawn Harris spoke in help of Williams, saying, “Derek’s character induced him to come back in and work and help this metropolis and the residents of this metropolis through the worst pandemic that we’ve had.” Harris added, “To be blunt, for those who’re terminating his employment, you’re terminating his life, in so many phrases.”
