Black Police Officer Arrested by ICE Agrees to Leave the Country Voluntarily

Nationwide — Jon Luke Evans, a Jamaican police officer from Previous Orchard Seaside, Maine, has agreed to depart the USA voluntarily after being arrested by immigration authorities. He had as soon as been cleared to work by federal checks, however ICE later challenged his standing.

Evans, a reserve officer with the Previous Orchard Seaside Police Division, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on July 25. Authorities accused him of overstaying his visa and trying to buy a firearm illegally, as reported by CNN.

After weeks in detention, a decide accepted his voluntary departure, permitting him to exit the nation at his personal expense as a substitute of present process formal deportation. ICE officers stated he may go away as early as Monday.

His arrest fueled pressure between city officers and federal authorities. Police Chief Elise Chard stated federal checks had beforehand confirmed Evans’ eligibility to work. She defined that the city relied on E-Confirm, a system that matches worker particulars with authorities data. Homeland Safety officers later criticized the city for relying too closely on this system.

Previous Orchard Seaside officers stated they continue to be dedicated to following state and federal legal guidelines. They plan to proceed utilizing each E-Confirm and the I-9 employment kind when hiring workers.

Evans was first detained on the Wyatt Detention Facility in Rhode Island earlier than being transferred to an ICE facility in Burlington, Massachusetts. It stays unclear if he had authorized illustration.

Experiences stated his voluntary departure spares him from deportation proceedings, although he should pay for his personal journey out of the U.S.
