I’m a born and raised New Yorker with huge recollections of how town was once — all the magical locations for meals, tradition, socializing, and basic galavanting that I’ve cherished, that over time have both disappeared or simply been forgotten. That’s, till you end up in a clandestine second on the nook of “hungry” and “not eager to attempt one thing new” the place you’re reminded of eating places which can be NYC establishments that stand the check of time.
On a current Saturday, I used to be invited downtown to go to Cloudy Donut’s Nolita location to check out their spring field of donuts. It will be my first time attempting NYC’s first 100% vegan donut retailer and first Black-owned meals and beverage enterprise in Brooklyn Heights (authentic location) and Nolita. I’ve seen them come throughout my social feed and was grateful to have the chance to lastly attempt them.
I invited my buddy Raquel to affix me within the expertise and potential sugar excessive. We queued within the easy trendy house whereas noting the flavors and coveting some donuts that left with a visitor forward of us who bought greater than a dozen. Sure, we had been donut hawks!
For our spring field, we bought to decide on 4 mini donuts — a blessing for our gradual metabolisms. We selected coconut cream, brown butter chocolate chip, lemon pistachio, and berry sage. Rising grateful and victorious, we sat proper exterior on their bench and judiciously cut up all of them.

The decision: dah-voon! These gentle, ethereal, yeasted, fried, not greasy morsels are deftly balanced with beautiful and sudden flavors. These are donuts we all know and love which can be consciously vegan. Of the lot, our fave was the lemon pistachio for the tart, candy, nutty crunch of all of it. I’ll most actually return for extra, particularly the bananas Foster when they’re in season.
Subsequent on our agenda was some lunch, however the place? The bustling streets on a stunning sunny and heat day had me feverishly looking my cellphone for a brand new place to attempt. Then, like a moth to a flame, our OG New Yorkers superpowers tapped in and we discovered ourselves in a pole place nook banquet seat on the iconic Balthazar on Spring Road.
Eating places like Balthazar are what my ’90s NYC SoHo recollections are fabricated from — all are welcoming, present nice skilled service, and provide a constant high quality of French bistro meals. Raquel and I shared the Balthazar salad, heat goat cheese tart, and cheeseburger with frites. No notes. We thanked our spirited server in as many languages as attainable all through our meal to see what number of she knew, and taught her some for all the worldwide visitors she serves, and she or he was recreation to do it.
Our OG superpower didn’t steer us unsuitable as a result of we had been speculated to be there — to satisfy and have a voracious keekee with the enduring Brooke Shields and her buddy about ladies of a sure age enterprise. And no, we didn’t take an image ’trigger that’s what OG New Yorkers do!
Raquel and I walked uptown by the river and marked one other nice day within the annals of our lives.
Thanks for studying, and pleased consuming!
