Black Grandmother, Retired Educator Launches New Book Fair for Children of Color

Nationwide — On Saturday, July twenty seventh, Valerie J. Lewis Coleman, a 60-year-old African American grandmother and former instructor, will host the Once I See Me™ BIPOC Kids’s E-book Truthful as a day for the Dayton, Ohio group to return collectively to rejoice range in youngsters’s literature.

Valerie is an creator, engineer, and retired educator who taught at 4 completely different schools as an Adjunct Math Teacher for 23 years. She says that her occasion guarantees to be a dynamic gathering of authors, readers, and supporters, fostering a love for studying and writing amongst BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Individuals of Shade) youngsters. The guide honest runs from 11am to 4pm on the West Department Library, 300 Abbey Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45417. Valerie feedback, “I wrote my first youngsters’s guide, Oh, The Issues I Can Be Once I See Me, to encourage my brown grandchildren to numerous profession aspirations by offering examples of people that did what they hope to do and who appear like them. As I visited colleges, organizations, and childcare amenities, I met youngsters who had by no means seen a guide with characters that appear like them. I knew that I needed to do extra to encourage their love for studying. To pique their curiosity, increase their confidence, and improve their capacity to attach with the world round them, I created Once I See Me™ BIPOC Kids’s E-book Truthful.”

Coleman, who has hosted citywide guide occasions in Dayton since 2005, says, “Illustration issues, and when youngsters see themselves mirrored in tales showcased by gifted BIPOC authors, they get enthusiastic about studying.”

The day’s festivities embody:
