“Schooling was one thing that I attempted to run from,” mentioned Gordon Williams, who’s the Tv Studio Operations Supervisor at Lamar College. He initially went to highschool to check radio, tv, and movie, however with instructing, he can nonetheless be artistic and embed movie into the work he does at Lamar. He additionally discovered that working in schooling “is much more rewarding” than his preliminary thought a long time in the past.

Rising up, Williams took a particular curiosity in tv and all the time watched the information, motion pictures, sitcoms, and simply “puzzled the way it all got here to be.” This curiosity led him to Lamar College within the mid-nineties. “Being at Lamar is a dream come true. I imagine creativity is one among my life’s functions, so with the ability to work and be artistic and create alternatives for others has all the time been a ardour for me.”

Placing this ardour to work, Williams has labored on two initiatives which might be historic, inspiring, informative, and easily, phenomenal. These initiatives embody The Beaumont Race Riot of 1943 and The Charlton-Pollard Neighborhood.

For The Beaumont Race Riot of 1943, the concept got here from a e book he obtained. “Twenty years in the past, an actor that I labored with gave me a e book about Black film posters from the early 19 lots of. And there was a line within the e book that mentioned race riots occurred in Detroit, Los Angeles, and Beaumont, Texas in 1943. Rising up in Texas, all of us took Texas historical past, however this was one thing that I had not heard of. So, I began researching, then began speaking to my colleagues, and we began doing analysis for a documentary.”

The documentary didn’t take off like they wished to, in order that they continued with analysis, performed interviews, and simply sat on it for a number of years. It was round 2012, that they determined to do one thing with that analysis, and a documentary was born. If you’re not conversant in the Beaumont Race Riot of 1943, “throughout June of 1943, the Black neighborhood was getting ready their Juneteenth celebration. Ten days later, the Ku Klux Klan had scheduled their regional conference within the space. So as to add to this powder keg, one rape and one alleged rape involving Black males assaulting white girls occurred. One of many girls was a daughter of a shipyard employee. Enraged, over two thousand shipyard employees and near a thousand residents ransacked houses and enterprise within the black part of downtown Beaumont.”

For The Charlton-Pollard Neighborhood, Williams mentioned that the Division of Communication and Media was approached by Exxon Mobil, and so they wished to provide cash to assist college students get hands-on expertise working within the media. Exxon Mobil then prompt they examine The Charlton-Pollard Neighborhood. So, Williams and his coworker on the time began doing analysis, and the tales they got here throughout from speaking to individuals “have been superb.”

“The “Southend” or Charlton-Pollard was established by Charles Pole Charlton, a freed slave that got here to Beaumont in 1869 who established colleges for Black together with Reverend Woodson Pipkin. Charlton’s son Terry, together with Titus Thomas Pollard, have been principals of the black colleges who mixed their efforts to kind Charlton-Pollard Excessive College in 1924.”

Williams careworn that there was a variety of data left on the edit room flooring for the documentary as there was not sufficient time to inform your complete story of the neighborhood. “It’s simply an introduction to hopefully get individuals to study concerning the oldest Black neighborhood… and college students had the chance to work on the crew to study this historical past from individuals, and the emotion that you simply noticed on digital camera was mirrored within the college students.” The scholars have been capable of study helpful expertise and palms on expertise about life and the neighborhood. “I imagine this story is common and it brings again that sense of nostalgia that all of us really feel for the neighborhood that we grew up in.”

When discussing our nation at the moment relating to historical past and the way there have been legal guidelines put in place to try to erase or diminish Black historical past, Williams mentioned, “I really feel like whether or not you want historical past or not, it occurred…Even for those who don’t essentially agree with the historical past, for those who’re in a room with somebody that doesn’t appear to be you the place you’ll be able to simply have a dialogue about historical past…and listen to totally different views, I believe that’s helpful. That’s the ability of creativity. Creativity means that you can have communication with others if you’ll.”

For the good work that Williams and his colleagues has achieved, he obtained a congressional commendation and was honored with particular congressional recognition from the workplace of U.S. Consultant and Texas native Brian Babin. “I’m nonetheless wrapping my head and coronary heart round it. I do know that it means publicity for these tales, which is essential, and receiving the award, throughout the anniversary of the race riot that occurred 80 years in the past…I used to be speechless at occasions as a result of there may be alignment occurring there. And I believe, once more, these tales have to be informed, they have to be shared.”

Williams needs everybody to be inspired and motivated by the tales he and his staff created and hope it’s a possibility for individuals to exit of their communities and discover out concerning the hidden gems like The Charlton-Pollard neighborhood, and to share these tales with others.

“I hope different individuals are simply as impressed as effectively, as a result of these tales they have to be informed. We hear about all the primary historic figures and narratives that we’ve been listening to about during the last a long time, from slavery to The Civil Rights Motion, however there are smaller tales that haven’t even been informed but, or that we don’t even know but. So, I’m hoping that individuals are motivated to, to inform these tales.”
