Baltimore’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation hosts Wordsmith

With its renovations now full, the historic Stavros Niarchos Basis (SNF) Parkway goals to ascertain itself as a multi-disciplinary performing arts hub within the Baltimore neighborhood. 

As a part of that aim, the theater has launched its inaugural artist residency program with Wordsmith, a famend poet and lyricist that blends music, storytelling and social influence, as one of many three native artists chosen for the primary cohort.

Every resident receives a $6,000 stipend, rehearsal entry and technical assist to develop authentic work that shall be staged later this 12 months. The opposite residents are Zane Forshee, an interdisciplinary efficiency artist working throughout motion, sound and immersive staging, and Andrea Conte, a theater maker and director targeted on devised efficiency and visible storytelling.

Wordsmith shall be producing two evenings of youth theater and music. “Uncle Bey’s Will” is a reinterpretation of Act 2, Scene 1 from Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Misplaced,” with necessary cultural context that explores household, legacy and loss. The manufacturing was developed collaboratively along with his college students and facilities on a father determine who serves because the “nucleus” of his neighborhood earlier than his sudden loss of life leaves younger folks to navigate grief, household divides and rising up amid instability. 

“I simply felt like telling not simply that story, however telling a Black story of how Black households have discovered so some ways to persevere all through time,” stated Wordsmith. 

His second manufacturing, “Community to Freedom,” is an orchestral work for a chamber ensemble and choir that brings the historical past and spirit of the Underground Railroad to life via music and storytelling. With the 250th anniversary of the nation occurring this 12 months,  he says this mission is why he selected to use for the residency, because it had been produced beforehand at a distinct venue.

Wordsmith says his final aim with this residency is to showcase the younger expertise within the metropolis of Baltimore, notably in areas that could be underserved relating to the humanities. General, he stated, the residency presents a possibility to be in neighborhood with others and encourage them. 

“I need folks to know that they’re heard, they’re seen, they’re valued,” stated Wordsmith. He added that he desires folks to really feel related to what’s occurring on stage. “We’re exhibiting from youngsters all the way in which to adults on the highest degree of career that anyone might be up on this stage placing on inspiring works.”

Troy Burton is a Baltimore native with almost 40 years of expertise within the theater neighborhood and acted as a juror in the course of the choice of residents. Burton shared that what made Wordsmith distinctive was with the ability to exist between each music and spoken phrase. Burton stated he felt related to all of the candidates as he has needed to apply for comparable alternatives all through his profession. He feels that this residency program is critical for the humanities in Baltimore and is a step in the precise path. 

“I believe in Baltimore, it’s crucial that artists have alternatives like this, however particularly artist mentors,” stated Burton. “Having the Parkway current its residency, it’s like having a mentor as a result of they may get the assist that they should produce their work.”

“It’s so obligatory,” he added. “And we’d like extra like this in Baltimore.”
