Baltimore’s Key Bridge struck by ship, collapses into water – AFRO American Newspapers

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has issued an alert on Fb and different social media platforms warning drivers to “keep away from I-695 southeast hall” as a portion of the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge suffered a “collapse because of ship strike.” 

The I-95 and I-895 tunnels are different routes to the Key Bridge.

Movies exhibiting the scene instantly started to make rounds on social media. A ship could be seen putting a pillar of the bridge, inflicting a significant portion of it to fall into the Baltimore Harbor within the early morning of March 26.

Emergency personnel have responded, as a number of vehicles could be seen actively utilizing the bridge for journey in the intervening time it collapsed.

Baltimore County Govt Johnny Olszewski commented on the incident through social media. 

“We’re intently monitoring the continued state of affairs on the Key Bridge,” stated Olszewski to his followers on X, the platform previously often known as Twitter. 

“I stay involved with our emergency response crew in addition to state and native companions,” he stated. “Response efforts are ongoing. Our prayers stay with all these impacted.” 

In keeping with info launched by MDTA, the Key Bridge opened in 1977 and was “the third longest steady truss bridge on the planet. With the principle span stretching 1,200 toes.” 

Later within the morning, Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency because of the collapse.

“My workplace is in shut communication with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Govt Johnny Olszewski, and the Baltimore Hearth Division as emergency personnel are on the scene following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge,” stated Gov. Wes Moore in a press release. “I’ve declared a State of Emergency right here in Maryland and we’re working with an interagency crew to shortly deploy federal assets from the Biden Administration.”

Moore continued, “We’ll stay in shut contact with federal, state, and native entities which might be conducting rescue efforts as we proceed to evaluate and reply to this tragedy.”

Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman spoke out on the incident.

“It’s really horrific to see stories of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse early this morning. I’m praying for and considering of all these individuals who have been touring on the bridge, in addition to the crew of the cargo ship concerned and their households,” stated Lierman in a press release. “I’m so grateful for the efforts of first responders from across the state aiding with the continued seek for victims and survivors. I ask Marylanders to be alert as they make their means across the space in the present day.”
