Baltimore Approves $48M Settlement For ‘Harlem Park Three’

The Baltimore Metropolis Board permitted a $48 million settlement for the wrongful conviction of three Black males, often called the “Harlem Park Three,” after the trio spent practically 40 years behind bars.

In line with CBS Information, the settlement, which was unanimously permitted on Oct. 18 by the board, is the biggest payout in Baltimore’s historical past. The Harlem Park Three—Alfred Chestnut, Andrew Stewart, and Ransom Watkins, all 16 years outdated—have been wrongfully convicted in 1983 for killing of their childhood good friend Dewitt Duckett.

After receiving lifetime sentences in 2019, the trio was exonerated in 2019 after being in jail for 36 years.

Their lawsuit towards the Metropolis of Baltimore accused the law enforcement officials of coercing younger witnesses to manufacture their involvement and that the detectives additionally introduced a false narrative that positioned the crime on the three people.
