As the USA approaches its 250th anniversary, the “Freedom & Resistance” exhibition on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C., provides a profound reflection on the nation’s historical past. Impressed by The 1619 Mission, the exhibit seeks to reframe America’s founding narrative by centering the experiences and contributions of Black Individuals.

Launched on Jan. 16, 2026, the exhibition options artworks from people of all ages, exploring themes of freedom and resistance. The initiative is a collaboration between the New York Occasions Journal, led by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Heart, and visitor curator Dominique Hazzard.

“The 1619 Mission is an ongoing initiative… that goals to reframe the nation’s historical past by inserting the results of slavery and the contributions of Black Individuals on the very heart of our nationwide narrative,” in accordance with the New York Occasions Journal.

Past the unique publication, the undertaking has expanded to incorporate “The 1619 Mission: A Visible Expertise,” an illustrated version, and “The 1619 Mission: Born on the Water,” an image guide detailing the consequences of slavery and the historical past of Black resistance within the U.S.

Nikole Hannah-Jones, the creator of The 1619 Mission and curator of the exhibition, emphasised the significance of confronting historic erasure. “A part of what we’re doing right here is pushing again towards that erasure, particularly within the nation’s capital and particularly on this 250th yr,” she said. “We had been right here. We now have been right here virtually so long as the Europeans can declare that they had been right here. We’re going to be seen.”

The exhibition is split into three sections: “Artworks from The 1619 Mission: A Visible Expertise,” “Echoes of 1619 in Washington, D.C.,” and “Via the Eyes of D.C. Youth.” Center and highschool college students from D.C. had been invited to submit unique paintings on the themes of freedom and resistance, leading to greater than 100 submissions, with 80 items featured within the exhibition. The exhibit runs by March 15, 2026.

The importance of this exhibition is underscored by latest occasions in Philadelphia, the place the Nationwide Park Service eliminated the “Freedom and Slavery within the Making of a New Nation” exhibit from the President’s Home Web site at Independence Nationwide Historic Park. The exhibit, which honored 9 people enslaved by George Washington, was dismantled following an govt order from President Donald Trump geared toward eliminating content material that “disparages” American historical past.

Philadelphia has since filed a lawsuit towards the federal authorities, arguing that the removing violates a cooperative settlement requiring session earlier than modifications to the exhibit. Advocates, together with Michael Coard of the Avenging the Ancestors Coalition, have condemned the removing as an try and whitewash historical past.

On this context, the “Freedom & Resistance” exhibition stands as a strong counter-narrative, asserting the significance of acknowledging and preserving Black historical past. As Hannah-Jones remarked, “We’re going to be seen.”
