No information is nice information. Free AmNews is nice information. The “Neighborhood Issues” pilot program wrapped up final Thursday, March 28 on the Frederick Douglass Homes in Higher Manhattan, marking step one for the initiative to distribute the town’s oldest and largest Black newspaper all through New York Metropolis Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments—on the home.

“Douglass Homes [are] at all times making historical past so to get into the palms of our residents the Amsterdam [News] is the last word—it represents us, it appears like us,” mentioned Carmen Quinones, the event’s resident affiliation president. “And now, simply reaching out and saying ‘we wish to do that pilot program with you’ was an honor. For me to increase it to [the South Jamaica Houses] and different developments…is what we’re doing.”

Quinones, who not too long ago introduced candidacy for the 69th Meeting District, talked about rising up with the paper, joking that different “legacy” newspapers had been banned in the home by her mom.

Monetary vertical for the pilot comes from unions Teamsters Native 237 and 1199SEIU. And particular shoutout to the AmNews’ distribution supervisor Benita Darby. As for what’s subsequent, the papers hope to seek out their means all through public housing citywide.

“Now that the pilot has been so profitable, we stay up for the continued success of this ‘Neighborhood Issues’ initiative on an ongoing and persevering with foundation,” mentioned Writer Elinor Tatum. “Our hope is that we are able to broaden ‘Neighborhood Issues’ to different New York Metropolis Housing Authority (NYCHA) Developments, and their predominantly Black and minority residents.”

“Right now is a symbolic day the place now we have the ‘fourth division of presidency’—the press—making itself obtainable to one of the vital leveraged populations within the nation [and one of] largest Black and Hispanic [communities] within the nation: NYCHA households,” added Manny Martinez, resident council president of South Jamaica Homes.Tandy Lau is a Report for America corps member and writes about public security for the Amsterdam Information.
