Nationwide — Anthony Collins, a 41-year-old African American man from Toms River, New Jersey, has been sentenced to 3 years in state jail after a confrontation that turned deadly. The incident, which occurred on September 18, 2023, in Seaside Heights, concerned Collins punching a 70-year-old white man, Robert Might, who had been harassing Collins’ household for months. On that day, Might not solely collided with Collins’ spouse on his bicycle but in addition hurled a racial slur at Collins. The only punch from Collins brought about Might to fall, hitting his head on the curb and finally resulting in his demise.

In keeping with Asbury Park Press, in court docket, Collins’ protection lawyer, Terrence Turnbach, argued that Collins was defending his household from ongoing racial harassment. Turnbach highlighted that Might had repeatedly focused Collins’ kids with racial slurs, making the scenario insupportable for the household. In keeping with Turnbach, Collins acted in protection of his spouse and himself, particularly since Might had already assaulted Collins’ spouse earlier than directing his hateful language at Collins.

Robert Might’s refusal of medical consideration after the incident might need contributed to his demise, as he succumbed to his accidents practically two weeks later. This facet of the case has led some to query whether or not Might’s personal stubbornness performed a task in his destiny, alongside the deadly punch from Collins. Nonetheless, the court docket has held Collins accountable, albeit with a sentence that’s lighter than traditional for manslaughter, because of sure evidentiary points.

The Ocean County Prosecutor, Bradley D. Billhimer, acknowledged the challenges in proving the case, which influenced the plea settlement and subsequent sentencing. The prosecutor recommended Might’s household for his or her understanding and acceptance of the authorized consequence, although using the time period “sufferer” in reference to Might has been contentious, given the circumstances main as much as his demise.
