2025 NY Film Fest has awards contenders and cinematic risks

From the hushed halls of academia to the again alleys of New Jersey, this 12 months’s New York Movie Competition presents a cinematic lineup full of excessive drama, deeply private reckoning, and a few of the 12 months’s impossible comebacks. The 63rd annual occasion, operating September 26 to October 13 at Movie at Lincoln Heart, returns as each a showcase for world-class cinema and a launching pad for titles already pulsing with awards-season buzz.

The pageant’s headline grabber is the reappearance of Daniel Day-Lewis. The famously elusive actor steps again earlier than the digicam in “Anemone,” the directorial debut of his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. This wry, triptych-structured meditation on sibling rivalry and estrangement, led by Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, and Tom Waits, arrives in New York with severe worldwide buzz after its Venice triumph.

For Closing Evening, Bradley Cooper pivots from final 12 months’s “Maestro” to crowd-pleasing comedy with “Is This Factor On?” Impressed by comic John Bishop, the movie follows Will Arnett as a freshly divorced man who turns to stand-up. Its lighter tone simply may hit the fitting be aware with Academy voters.
