15 HBCUs unite in historic push for elite research status

Traditionally Black Schools and Universities (HBCUs) have all the time pushed the bounds of what society tried to assert was potential for Black communities. And this week, 15 establishments have continued that legacy with the launch of the Affiliation of HBCU Analysis Establishments (AHRI). 

A collective of HBCUs throughout the nation has come collectively to kind AHRI, a nationwide coalition designed to speed up world-class analysis and broaden institutional capacities and funding to assist universities addressing a few of society’s most urgent points. 

“At this time isn’t just an announcement, however a declaration that HBCUs will not be solely contributors to analysis and innovation, but additionally leaders shaping a brand new period of discovery, reimagining each the options and the techniques that drive analysis,” mentioned Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick, interim president and president emeritus of Howard College and AHRI’s interim president, in a memo.

The coalition’s central goal is the Analysis 1 (R1) Carnegie Classification, the very best designation for analysis exercise within the nation, which comes with extra federal funding, better status, and a neater path to recruiting high school and college students. Proper now, just one HBCU holds that designation: Howard College. 14 of AHRI’s member establishments carry R2 standing,  Excessive Analysis Exercise, and the objective is to maneuver them up.

Collectively, these establishments account for 50% of all competitively awarded federal analysis funding amongst HBCUs targeted on well being, science, schooling, justice reform, and financial improvement. 

Partnering with the Affiliation of American Universities (AAU), a corporation dedicated to sustaining a powerful system of educational analysis and schooling, AHRI’s places of work will likely be within the AAU’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. As Dr. Ruth Simmons—the previous president of Brown College, Smith School, and Prairie View A&M, and now senior adviser to Harvard’s president on HBCU engagement—defined, HBCUs have traditionally been ignored of the dominant analysis dialog. 

“AHRI marks a strong new chapter within the HBCU analysis panorama, bringing establishments which have too typically labored in isolation into sustained collaboration with each other and with the nation’s main analysis universities,” Simmons mentioned in a press release. 

The coalition has additionally secured technical help from Harvard’s Workplace of the Vice Provost for Analysis and a three-year, $1.05 million grant from the Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery (H&LS) Initiative, which was established in 2022 after Harvard formally acknowledged its historic ties to the slave commerce. This announcement comes weeks after lecturers working with the initiative declare the Ivy League has fired researchers and tried to dilute or delay their analysis efforts.

Whereas groundbreaking donations from philanthropists like McKenzie Scott have helped HBCUs broaden their tutorial packages and assist for college students, AHRI’s leaders are issuing a direct name to motion for presidency, company, and philanthropic companions to put money into the way forward for HBCU analysis and innovation.
