When you can’t use the phrase Black in Black Historical past Month…is it simply Historical past Month? That’s the query Aaliyah Steward, a Florida A&M College regulation scholar, is asking herself after the HBCU gave her pushback for a Black Historical past Month flyer.

When Steward submitted a flyer for an upcoming occasion hosted by the Black Legislation College students Affiliation, she was shocked to study that it had been flagged for utilizing the phrases “black,” “affirmative motion,” and “ladies.”

“We couldn’t use the phrase ‘black’ in Black Historical past Month. We must abbreviate it,” Stewart informed Orlando Information 6.  “I used to be very indignant and baffled as a result of it is a Traditionally Black School and College, and for them to say we are able to’t use the phrase ‘black’ was sort of insane.

“I simply don’t need us to be censored this fashion. Not with the ability to use the phrase ‘black’ could be very irritating,” she added.

After bringing her considerations to college officers, the Florida HBCU cited its compliance with state rules governing the allocation of funds to Variety, Fairness, and Inclusion (DEI) packages.

“Florida A&M College has persistently been in full compliance with Senate Invoice 266 and Board of Governors’ Regulation 9.016. We assist and have carried out the coverage route established by the Governor, the Legislature, and the Board of Governors because it pertains to DEI, and according to associated federal courtroom rulings,” the college wrote in a press release.

In 2023, the State College System of Florida’s Board of Governors accredited Invoice 266, which set rules for 12 public universities prohibiting them from expending “any state or federal funds to advertise, assist, or preserve any packages or campus actions that advocate for range, fairness, and inclusion as outlined on this regulation.”

Whereas the college emphasizes its compliance with the regulation, Stewart shared that this expertise has been disheartening. The college reportedly accredited the flyer with the abbreviation; nevertheless, Stewart says she resubmitted it with out the abbreviation and is awaiting a response.

“We’re simply making an attempt to advertise the core mission assertion of range and inclusion for everyone, so it’s very irritating,” she informed the information outlet.
