Woman who called 911 to report domestic violence fatally shot by police

A 27-year-old girl, who known as 911 to report that she was being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, was fatally shot by a Los Angeles county sheriff’s deputy who responded to the scene, legal professionals for her household and police officers stated. Per The Guardian, the deputy who opened hearth on Niani Finlayson additionally shot and killed one other particular person in an analogous scenario three years prior. 

In a press release, the LA Sheriff’s Division (LASD) stated the deadly December 7 incident occurred after Finlayson contacted police and “reported that her boyfriend wouldn’t go away her alone after which screaming and sounds of a battle might be heard.”

The deceased girl’s household lawyer stated deputies who responded to the residence in Lancaster heard screams, including that Finlayson had additionally been injured by her ex-boyfriend on the time, and her 9-year-old daughter was additionally along with her. The household lawyer additionally stated Finlayson needed her ex-boyfriend to be taken out of the residence.

However what led to deputy Ty Shelton fatally capturing Finlayson is but to be disclosed. The LASD can be but to make surveillance footage of the incident public. The LASD additionally stated Finlayson was in possession of a knife and threatening her ex-boyfriend earlier than Shelton shot and killed her. However her household stated she was a home violence sufferer who required assist and didn’t come off as a menace to the responding deputies. 

“The police lied that my mother was threatening them,” Finlayson’s daughter, Xaisha, stated at a press convention on December 22, per The Guardian. “She was my finest good friend. She was all the time there for me. It’s unbelievable that she’s gone and he or she’s not coming again. I miss my mother.”

Finlayson’s household has since introduced a lawsuit towards the county and sheriff’s division. They’re accusing the defendants of wrongful demise, assault, and civil rights violations.

“You could have somebody who is looking the police for assist, and he or she will get killed by the police who she’s asking for help,” the household’s lawyer, Bradley Gage, stated. “When you name police for assist, you assume the officers are going to guard and serve you. The LASD stated they’ve launched an investigation into the incident.
